Dispensary

Shap Medical Practice is a dispensing practice. This is a great convenience for patients who are able to collect medicines at the time of seeing the doctor or nurse. However, we are not allowed to dispense to patients whose home address is within 1 mile of a chemist, nor are we allowed to sell medicines that may otherwise be available without a prescription.

Opening Hours

The Dispensary is open during the following hours:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday – 9.00am – 1.00pm and 3.00pm – 6:00pm

Tuesday and Thursday – 9:00am – 1:00pm

Drug Stocks

We try to keep a stock of our most commonly used medicines at all times, but at periods of unexpected demand or when there are delivery problems, we may run low on some items. We receive a delivery from our supplier every weekday, so items that are not in stock can usually be acquired within 48 hours.

Repeat Prescriptions

If you require a repeat prescription, please contact the surgery at least 4 working days in advance. We would really appreciate it if you could call after 3.00pm to collect your repeat medication.

You can order medicines either by:

  1. Circling the appropriate items on the repeat prescription form and bringing it to the surgery in person
  2. Making a written list to include your name, the medicines required and contact details.
  3. Online via the link on this page

To register for the new online prescription service please let the dispensary team know by calling in person or telephone us. It is very quick and easy to register and set up.

Order Your Repeat Prescription Online

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WE NEED 4 WORKING DAYS NOTICE

Please remember to tell us where you would like to collect your medication from – Shap, Orton or Tebay.

Requests cannot be taken by phone.

Urgent requests

If you request repeat medication for ‘same day/urgent’ collection, the duty doctor will assess the urgency based upon clinical need.

Prescription Fees

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges
From 1 April 2023 the charges are:

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website, or advice can be found from the below:

Collecting from Orton

You may choose to collect your prescription from Orton surgery. All you need to do is select ‘Orton’ from the collect from box on the online order form or circle ‘Orton’ on your white slip.

Orton opening hours are as follows:

Tuesday
10:00am to 11:00am

If you do not collect your prescription from the Orton Surgery, it is taken back to Shap at the end of the Surgery.

Collecting from Tebay

You may choose to collect your prescription from Tebay surgery. All you need to do is select ‘Tebay’ from the collect from box on the online order form or circle ‘Tebay’ on your white slip.

Please note: When we take your medication to Tebay surgery we leave it there so unfortunately, if you elect to collect your prescription from Tebay it will not be available to collect at Shap.

Please Note: Medication will be delivered to Tebay on Tuesdays just after 11:00am.

Tebay opening hours are as follows:

Tuesday – 9:00am to 12:00pm
Thursday – 15:00pm to 18:30pm

Private Prescriptions

Some medicines, such as travel medicines, cannot be dispensed on a NHS prescription. They can be prescribed on a private prescription, and the cost of the prescription then reflects the actual cost of the medicine prescribed.
