Exciting news for patients managing obesity! The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) formally launched its guidance for the weight loss drug Tirzepatide on 23 December 2024.

This ground-breaking treatment will be available for adults aged 18 and over who:

Have obesity (BMI over 35), and
Have at least one weight-related health condition.

For individuals from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean backgrounds, the BMI threshold is lower (reduced by 2.5 kg/m²).

How Many People Could Benefit?
In England, an estimated 3.4 million people could qualify for Tirzepatide. Initially, the NHS will prioritize those with the most urgent clinical needs, particularly patients already receiving care from specialist weight management services (SWMS).

When and How Can You Access Tirzepatide?
Specialist Weight Management Services (SWMS): Available within 90 days of NICE's final guidance.
Primary Care (GP practices): Available within 180 days.

The NHS is also rolling out new services to ensure everyone receives the best care and support as the medication becomes more widely available.

Managing Demand in Primary Care
We understand this announcement may generate a lot of interest. To help manage inquiries, a self-referral portal has been created for patients interested in weight loss medication and lifestyle support.

What is the Self-Referral Portal?
The portal is an easy-to-use online form (takes 5–10 minutes to complete) where patients can:

Register their interest in Tirzepatide and other weight loss treatments.
Learn about lifestyle changes and support programs.

Once submitted, patients will be contacted within 4–6 weeks to attend an engagement session. These sessions will provide more information about the medications, eligibility, and next steps.
